The area suffered under frequent volcanic activity and the earthquakes of 1594 and 1610. Due to the damage caused to the infrastructure and the seismic activity, the city was relocated to its present location, about 20 miles to the west. The old city was gradually buried by the continuous expulsions of ash and volcanic stone coming from Momotombo and by lake sediments.

The ruins of León Viejo were discovered in 1967 and it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000. During the tour the foundations of some of the houses and partially restored buildings can be seen as the original church. We take you up a hill inside León Viejo from where you have great views over Lake Managua and the impressive Momotombo volcano and its little brother, Momotombito.

This tour is not for the faint hearted!

You will volcano board down the slopes of Cerro Negro, the youngest volcano in Central America (formed in 1850) as well as one of the most active onesits last eruption dates from 1999. It is only about 712 meters above sea level, but the ascent is steep and tough. Upon arrival at the volcano, you will receive a short technical training from your experienced bilingual guide. Put on the protective equipment and get ready for the ride of your life!

The loose rocks, steep inclination, and heavy boards make the hike a challenge, though we do make frequent stops to inform you about the history of the volcano and point out features, such as the craters and lava fields. Before heading to the steeper and outer rim for the real point of descent, you can do a short test run inside the crater. After some final orientations you will then board all the way down to the base of Cerro Negro.
