A couple of thousand years ago the summit of the Maderas (1394 m) exploded and a multitude of lava boulders were scattered all around the slopes of the volcano. Today, the truncated cone of the Maderas is covered in thick cloud forest. On its summit, a crater lagoon has formed where you can swim in a serene setting. Enjoy this UNESCO biosphere reserve with its cloud forest hosting a diverse floral and faunal life!

Early in the morning, a local guide will pick you up at your hotel and take you to go to the south side of the island near Balgüe which is located on the shores of the Maderas Volcano. 

On this tour you will be transferred to the east of the island; from there you will start (with your local guide) hiking the Maderas volcano, one of Ometepe’s 2 volcanoes, hosting an extensive cloud forest and wildlife. The Maderas Volcano is a 1350 mts. (4,429 ft.) hike where you will reach the lagoon at the top of the volcano. This is a strenuous and long hike (averaging 6 hours). After your hike you will return to your hotel. 

Note: Good physical condition is required for this tour.

The Mombacho Natural Reserve is one of the two remaining humid cloud forests in the Pacific region of Nicaragua. The reserve is home to the 1,345 meter dormant Mombacho volcano. Upon entering the reserve, visitors are driven up a steep 4 kilometer road to the biological station near the summit. If you love lush greenery and biodiversity, this place is definitely for you. The park has many trails and sight -seeing spots, which on a clear day, provides spectacular views of nearby Granada, an archipelago of islands known as Las Isletas and Lake Nicaragua.

You will be picked up from your hotel in Granada at around 8 am and be driven to the Mombacho Natural Reserve. There, you will be driven up a steep 4 kilometer road to the biological station near the summit.

You may choose to do a guided hike or zipline for an extra fee, or just observe the nature that will surround you. At the end of the tour you will be driven back to your hotel.

Then will know the famous Masaya Handicrafts Market, considered the heart of handicrafts in Nicaragua. In addition to the unique products Nicaraguans as hammocks, embroidered blouses, wood carvings, leather goods, ceramics, paintings and hemp fabric, the market is quite large and offers sundries. The Craft Market is located in what used to be the Old Market, built in 1891, destroyed twice by fire and rebuilt to make it a safe and convenient shopping. Continue to Catarina, typical Nicaraguan village that allows views of Lake Nicaragua, the city of Granada, Mombacho Volcano and the Apoyo Lagoon. Meet the verdant volcano twin thrusting out of a fresh water lake perfectly paired with a magical crater lake atop. Unlike its active neighbor, Concepcion, you will explore the slopes and crater of the dormant Maderas Volcano on an 8-hour hike. Along the way, you will encounter remnants of the pre-Columbian era as well as white-faced howler monkeys in their natural habitat. Good physical condition is required for this activity. Hotel pickup, professional guide, entrance fees and boxed lunch are included.

After hotel pickup in Isla de Ometepe at 7am, you will transfer to Finca Magdalena to begin your Maderas volcano hike. Begin walking through the farm community along the eastern slopes of the volcano. While on the walk, you will encounter several pre-Columbian remnants along the trail. The trail is rocky and muddy and the climb toward the Maderas crater is arduous; therefore, good physical condition is required.

Continuing the hike, you will climb the steep slopes through the forest encountering white-faced howler monkeys rustling in the leaves and perched in the trees looking at those who dare to visit their habitat. Hiking to reach the top of Maderas will take several hours, but once you arrive be prepared for what awaits you, a mystical crater lake and amazing views of the island and surrounding landscape.

Upon completion of enjoying the views and boxed lunch, you will begin your trek down the volcano's slopes back to Finca Magdalena. Upon arrival, join your vehicle for your return to your hotel in Isla de Ometepe.
